Kulith Pithla | Horse gram flour Pithla

Ingredients

  • 1 cup horse gram (kulith) flour
  • 10 to 12 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp asafoetida /hing
  • 4 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • 4 to 5 petals of kokum
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  • 2 tbsp fresh, grated coconut

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, add 1 cup of horse gram flour.  
  • Add 2 cups of water and mix well to make a smooth mixture without any lumps. Keep this aside. 
  • Crush garlic and keep aside.
  • Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan.
  • Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and asafoetida.
  • Add crushed garlic and saute for few seconds.
  • Add chopped chillies and saute for few seconds.
  • Add chopped onions and saute till they turn soft.
  • Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
  • Now gradually add the horse gram mixture while simultaneously stirring the mixture, on a low flame.  
  • Keep stirring the mixture continuously on low flame to avoid any lump formation.
  • Cook until the mixture starts thickening.
  • Add kokum petals and mix well.   
  • Cover the lid and cook on low heat for 8 to10 minutes.
  • Next, add 1 ½ cups of water and mix well until you get a homogenous mixture. You can add water as per the required consistency. In case you want to serve this pithla with rice, you may add more water and keep the consistency thin. Simmer on low flame for few seconds.
  • Garnish the pithla with chopped coriander and grated, fresh coconut.
  • Serve Kulith Pithla with bhakri and Mirchi thecha.
