Wash and soak the dal in water for 2 hours.
Drain the water and transfer to a pressure cooker. Add 1 ½ cups of water. Add 1 tsp turmeric powder and salt. Pressurecook for 3 to 4 whistles. Keep cooked dal aside.
Peel and chop the drumsticks into 2 inch pieces. Wash and keep aside.
Heat a pan and add mustard seeds .
When the seeds start crackling, add cumin seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida and saute for few seconds.
Add chopped tomato and saute on low heat.
Add some water to avoid the spices from burning.
Add chopped drumsticks, ½ tsp turmeric powder and mix well.
Add around ½ cup water an cook covered till thedrumstick is cooked.
Next, add cooked dal, goda masala, red chilli powder,salt, tamarind pulp and jaggery.
Add water if required to adjust the consistency of aamti. Mix well.
Cover and cook for 5 to 7 minutes.
Garnish withchopped coriander leaves. Serve hot with steamed rice.
