Chana Dal Chutney

Ingredients

  • ½ cup split chickpeas (chana dal)
  • ½ cup fresh, grated coconut
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 5 to 6 dry red chillies (mix of Byadgi and Pandi chillies)
  • 1 large clove of garlic, chopped
  • a tiny piece of ginger
  • a lemon sized ball of tamarind
  • few curry leaves
  • salt to taste 

For tempering

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp udad dal
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • few curry leaves

Instructions

  • Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan.
  • Add chana dal and  saute till the chana dal turns aromatic.
  • Add dry red chillies and saute for few seconds.
  • Add curry leaves and saute for few more seconds. Turn off the heat and allow the roasted ingredients to cool completely.
  • Transfer the roasted ingredients to a mixer jar.
  • Add fresh, grated coconut, garlic, ginger, tamarind and salt.
  • Add some water and blend to a fine paste. Keep aside.
  • For tempering, heat oil in a pan.
  • Add udad dal, mustardseeds, dry red chillies and curry leaves.
  • When the ingredients start sizzling,pour into the chutney.
  • Serve Chana dal chutney with idli, dosa, akki roti or any South Indian snack. It can also be served as an accompaniment with meals.
