Ingredients

  • ½ cup foxtail millets
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • a small piece of cinnamon
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 green cardamom
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 small tomato, chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 green chilly, chopped
  • ½ cup fresh green peas
  • ½ cup chopped carrot
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp red chilly powder
  • ½ tsp cumin coriander powder
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • salt to taste
  • 1 ¼ cup water
  • chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions

  • Wash and soak foxtail millets in water for 6 to 7 hours.
  • After 6 hours, drain the water and keep soaked millets aside.
  • Heat a pan, Add cumin seeds.
  • When the seeds start crackling, add bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon and green cardamom, Saute for few seconds.
  •  Add onion slices, Sprinkle a pinch of salt and saute till onions turn soft.
  • Add chopped tomato, chopped green chilly, ginger garlic paste and saute.
  •  Add green peas and chopped carrot. Mix well.
  • Add turmeric powder, red chilly powder, cumin coriander powder, garam masala and salt. Mix well.
  • Add soaked millets and water. Cook on high heat till the water comes to a roaring boil. Reduce the heat, cover the pan and cook for 10 to 12 minutes. 
  • Garnish with chopped corianderleaves. Serve hot with curds/ raita.
