Pundi Gassi, a traditional Mangalorean breakfast is soft rice dumplings, steamed and then simmered in a fragrant coconut-based masala.
It is one of those humble Mangalorean dishes that was once more commonly made at home, but is not seen as often on breakfast tables these days.

About Pundi Gassi
There are different ways of making pundi in Mangalorean homes. It can be paired with different gravies and accompaniments, including versions made with seafood. I had earlier shared my Marwai da Adde, a one-pot preparation made with clams, and after that I received a few requests for Arepda Adde. So, this time, I thought of sharing another traditional favourite — Pundi Gassi, the simple vegetarian breakfast version.
The pundis are made with rice and fresh coconut. The batter is cooked until it thickens into a soft dough, shaped into small round dumplings and steamed. These soft pundis are then added to a flavourful gassi. The result is a hearty, wholesome breakfast that is especially comforting when served hot.
