Kulith Pithla – a flavourful Maharashtrian dish made from horsegram (kulith) flour.
Pithla is a traditional rustic dish from Maharashtra known for its simple yet flavourful preparation using the humble gram flour (besan). It is often referred to as farmer’s meal for being the staple food of rural communities. It is a thick curry made using gram flour and spices and is generally served with bhakri and Mirchi thecha.

About Kulith Pithla
Kulith Pithla is a thick curry made using horse gram flour which is known for its distinctive taste and nutritive value. Kulith Pithla is prepared by mixing horse gram flour with water to form a paste which is then cooked with various spices. It is a flavourful curry enjoyed with bhakri or even rice. Horse gram is known for its protein content making it an excellent choice for vegetarians and vegans for their protein requirements.
It is an excellent dish to enjoy during the monsoon season. The warning nature of this dish can provide comfort and satisfaction on rainy days.
List of ingredients to make Kulith Pithla
Horse gram flour
Herbs & spices : garlic, green chillies, turmeric powder, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, coriander leaves
Other ingredients: Oil, Onion, kokum , salt and fresh coconut
Step-wise recipe with pictures
In a mixing bowl, add horse gram flour , 2 cups of water and mix well to a smooth mixture without any lumps.
Crush garlic in a mortar and pestle. Keep aside.
Heat a pan. Add oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing, crushed garlic and saute.
Add chopped green chillies and saute for few seconds.
Add chopped onions and saute till the onions turn soft.
Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
Add horse gram mixture while simultaneously stirring the mixture, on a low flame.
Keep stirring the mixture continuously on low flame to avoid any lump formation. Cook until the mixture starts thickening. Add kokum petals and mix well.
Cover and cook for 8 to 10 minutes.
Further add more water as per the required consistency. I have added 1 ½ cups of water as I wanted thick pithla to be served with bhakris. In case you want to serve pithla with rice, you can add more water and cook the pithla. Simmer on low flame for few seconds. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and grated, fresh coconut.
Serve hot with jowar bhakri/ bajra bhakri or rice .

Kulith Pithla | Horse gram flour Pithla
Ingredients
- 1 cup horse gram (kulith) flour
- 10 to 12 cloves of garlic
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- ½ tsp asafoetida /hing
- 4 green chillies, finely chopped
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- salt to taste
- 4 to 5 petals of kokum
- 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
- 2 tbsp fresh, grated coconut
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, add 1 cup of horse gram flour.
- Add 2 cups of water and mix well to make a smooth mixture without any lumps. Keep this aside.
- Crush garlic and keep aside.
- Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan.
- Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and asafoetida.
- Add crushed garlic and saute for few seconds.
- Add chopped chillies and saute for few seconds.
- Add chopped onions and saute till they turn soft.
- Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
- Now gradually add the horse gram mixture while simultaneously stirring the mixture, on a low flame.
- Keep stirring the mixture continuously on low flame to avoid any lump formation.
- Cook until the mixture starts thickening.
- Add kokum petals and mix well.
- Cover the lid and cook on low heat for 8 to10 minutes.
- Next, add 1 ½ cups of water and mix well until you get a homogenous mixture. You can add water as per the required consistency. In case you want to serve this pithla with rice, you may add more water and keep the consistency thin. Simmer on low flame for few seconds.
- Garnish the pithla with chopped coriander and grated, fresh coconut.
- Serve Kulith Pithla with bhakri and Mirchi thecha.
