Jowar Roti

Jowar Roti – a wholesome, gluten-free flatbread made using sorghum flour.

Jowar also known as sorghum is a nutritious grain and has been a staple in Indian households for centuries. It is gluten-free, packed with nutrients and is a perfect choice for anyone looking to include healthier grains in their diet.

About Jowar Roti

If you are looking to add jowar in your diet, one of the simplest ways to consume jowar is in the form of rotis.  It is a healthy alternative to wheat rotis and is also a delicious addition to your meals. Although jowar flour can be challenging to work with due to the absence of gluten, with the right technique, you can make soft and pliable rotis effortlessly.

Jowar rotis pair beautifully with a variety of dishes, from pithla and vegetable curries to rich non-vegetarian gravies, adding a wholesome, nutritious touch to every meal. Today, I have served the rotis with Methi Matar Malai, Shengdana chutney, salad and pickle.

I have previously shared a recipe for jowar onion rotis which combines the health benefits of jowar with the flavor of onions for an even more delicious variation. You can check the recipe here for more ideas on incorporating jowar into your meals.

Heat 1 ½ cups of water and bring it to a rolling boil.

Add a pinch of salt and jowar flour. Once you add the flour, turn off the heat.

When the dough is still warm, knead it well to  make a soft dough. Add a tsp of oil and knead to make a soft pliable dough.

Once the dough is ready, take a small portion of it,  dust your work surface with jowar flour to prevent sticking. Using your fingers, gently pat and shape the dough ball to smooth out any cracks.

Use the rolling pin to make roti.

Heat a pan on medium heat. Place the roti on hot pan and cook on low heat.

Apply a thin layer of water on the roti using a damp cloth.

Flip the roti and cook on the other side. Continue cooking for another minute or so, flipping it once if needed, until both sides are evenly cooked. Repeat this process with the remaining dough, ensuring each roti is cooked to perfection.
