Tomato Sevai or Tomato Shavige or Tomato Idiyappam or Thakkali Sevai is tomato flavoured rice sevai . It is a popular South Indian snack/ breakfast dish and is pretty simple to make .
Rice Sevai also known as Semige in Tulu/Kannada and idiyappam in Tamil is traditionally made by soaking of rice, grinding the rice, making dumplings of the rice paste, steaming them and pressing the cooked dumplings using a sevai press. However various brands of dried sevai packets are easily available in stores. Some of the rice sevai recipes on this blog are rice vermicelli upma and lemon sevai. About Tomato Sevai
Tomato Sevai/ Shavige/ Idiyappam is a versatile South Indian dish which can be served as a snack or breakfast dish. It is made by cooking rice noodles and adding to a tangy and spicy tomato masala.
Tomato Sevai makes for a great option for lunch box. It is easy to prepare and convenient to pack. Tomato Sevai tastes fantastic on its own and does not need any accompaniment as such. However it can be paired with coconut chutney, curds or pickle.

Rice sevai | Rice Noodles : Different brands of rice vermicelli is available in stores. Cooking time may vary depending on the type of rice sevai. Thick rice sevai takes longer time to cook. I have used thin rice sevai which gets cooked in 3 to 4 minutes after it is soaked in boiling water.
Tomato : For making tomato sevai, tomato is one of the primary ingredients. It imparts a tangy flavour to this dish.
Lentils and nuts :, cashew nuts, udad dal and chana dal
Spices & Herbs : mustard seeds, green chillies, , ginger, curry leaves, turmeric powder, sambhar powder.
Other ingredients : onion, asafoetida and salt.
For garnishing : chopped coriander leaves.
Step-wise recipe with pictures
Take 1 cup of rice sevai in a large bowl.
Boil 2 to 3 cups of water. Bring it to a roaring boil.
Add boiling water to the rice sevail. Keep it soaked in hot water for 3 to 4 minutes.
Next, drain the water and spread the cooked sevai on the strainer. Keep aside.
Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. When the seeds start crackling, add chana dal, udad dal, curry leaves, chopped green chilly, chopped ginger and cashew nuts. Saute on low heat till the dals and cashew nuts are well roasted.
Add asafoetida. Gove a quick mix. Add chopped onion.
Saute till the onion turn soft. Next, add chopped tomato. Saute till the tomato turns mushy.
In case the mixture turns dry, sprinkle few drops of water to prevent it from getting burnt. Add turmeric powder, sambhar powder and salt. Mix well.
Add cooked sevai and mix gently till the sevai is coated well with the tomato masala.
Garnish with chopped coriander.

Ingredients
- 1 cup of thin rice sevai
- 1 tsp oil
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp udad dal
- 1 tsp chana dal
- few curry leaves
- 1 green chilly, finely chopped
- ¼ tsp ginger, finely chopped
- 4 to 5 cashew nuts
- a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 large tomato, finely chopped
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp sambar powder
- salt to taste
- 1 to 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
Instructions
- In a bowl, take 1 cup of rice sevai.
- Boil 2 to 3 cups of water.
- Add boiling water to the rice sevai.
- Keep it soaked in hot water for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Next, drain the water and spread the cooked sevai on the strainer. Keep aside.
- Heat oil in a pan.
- Add mustard seeds.
- When the seeds start crackling, add , chana dal, udad dal, curry leaves, chopped green chilly,chopped ginger and cashew nuts.
- Saute on low heat till the dals and cashew nuts are well roasted.
- Add asafoetida and give a quick mix.
- Add chopped onion and saute till it turns soft.
- Next, add chopped tomato and cook on low heat till the tomato turns mushy.
- In case the mixture is turning try, you can sprinkle few drops of water.
- Add turmeric powder, sambhar powder and salt. Mix well.
- Add cooked sevai and mix gently till the sevai is coated well with the tomato masala.
- Garnish with chopped coriander.
- Serve hot as it is or with coconut chutney or curds and pickle

Tomato sevai is a versatile dish and can be served for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It makes for a light snack and tiffin box item.
Tomato sevai can be served on its own without any accompaniment.
It pairs excellently with coconut chutney and neer chutney. The chutney enhances the overall taste of the dish.
You can pair it with fresh curds and pickle. Youghurt provides a creamy contrast to tomato sevai.
