Dal Dhokli is a traditional Gujarati one dish meal. It is made by boiling raw wheat flour roti pieces in mild sweet, tangy and spicy Gujarati dal. This dish is known as Chakolya or Varanphal in Marathi.
Ingredients
For Dal
¾ cup tuvar dal (split pigeon peas)
2 tbsp peanuts
1 tsp ghee
½ tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
Few curry leaves
A pinch of asafoetida
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp chilly powder
1 tsp garlic paste
4 to 5 kokum pieces
1 tbsp grated jaggery
Salt as per taste
For Dhokli
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/2 tbsp gram flour (besan)
¼ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp chilly powder
A pinch of asafoetida
1 tsp carom seeds (ajwain)
Salt as per taste
Method
For Dhoklis
- In a mixing bowl, combine wheat flour, gram flour, turmeric powder, chilly powder, asafoetida, carom seeds, and salt.
- Using little water, knead into a smooth dough.
- Divide the dough into medium round shaped balls.
- Roll out the dough ball into a circle of around 7 inches diameter.
- Cut into diamond shaped pieces and set this aside.
For Dal
- Wash and soak tuvar dal for an hour.
- Pressure cook the dal for 3 to 4 whistles.
- Boil the peanuts and keep aside.
- Heat ghee in a pan.
- Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and saute.
- Add the cooked dal.
- Add turmeric powder, chilly powder, kokum, jaggery, garlic paste, salt and mix well.
- Add the boiled peanuts to the dal.
- When the dal starts boiling, drop the diamond shaped dhoklis one by one into the dal.
- Give it a gentle stir and cook covered for 8 to 10 minutes or till the dhoklis get cooked well.
- Dal Dhokli is ready to be served.
Note : Simmer the dhoklis in dal just before serving, or else the dhoklis will turn soggy.
