Dal Rasam Rice – a comforting meal  that brings together the goodness of dal, the tangy flavors of rasam, and the heartiness of rice, all in a single pot.

About Dal Rasam Rice

Dal Rasam Rice is a flavourful one-pot dish  made with rice, dal and spices The dish is light yet satisfying, perfect for a quick meal or as a comforting  option on a busy day. It is best served with a dollop of ghee and a side of crisp papad and pickle.

Step-wise instructions to make Dal Rasam Rice

Wash and soak rice and tur dal for 30 minutes.

Soak tamarind in ¼ cup water for 30 minutes. 

 

Crush black pepper using mortar pestle and keep aside.

Chop onion, tomato and garlic. Keep aside.

Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, dry red chillies, pepper powder, chopped garlic, asafoetida, chopped onion and saute for a minute.

Add chopped tomato and saute till it turns mushy.

Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, rasam powder and mix well.

Stir in the tamarind pulp.

Add soaked rice and dal .

Add 4 cups of water and salt as per taste.Close the lid and pressure cook for 3 whistles.

 Open the pressure cooker after the pressure releases naturally.  Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve Dal rasam rice with papad and pickle.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup rice

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • 4 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 4 tsp rasam powder
  • salt as per taste
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
