Green peas curry

Green Peas curry – fresh winter peas cooked in a spicy, green gravy.

Fresh green peas are in season and there are umpteen number of dishes one can make using green peas. Green peas are low in calories and rich in protein and so makes for a healthy addition in most of the dishes. Some of the must-try recipes using winter peas are Chura Matar, Matar ka NImona, Methi Matar Malai, Matar pulao, Matar Kachori etc.

Green Peas Curry or Matar chi Usal is a simple Maharashtrian recipe made with simple ingredients that are easily available in almost every Indian kitchen. Green peas are cooked in a green gravy. The green masala is made by grinding coconut, fresh coriander leaves, green chillies, garlic and ginger. This is a simple yet flavourful curry which pairs well with chapati, rice and even bread/paav.

I have added goda masala to the gravy which gives a unique flavour to the dish. However if you do not have goda masala, you can use garam masala. Goda masala can be used for many Maharashtrian recipes such as Masale bhaat, Matkichi usal, Bharli Tondli (Stuffed Ivygourds), Padwal Chana Dal Sabzi, Katachi Amti etc.

Ingredients used for this recipe are fresh peas, freshly grated coconut, coriander leaves, green chillies, ginger, garlic, oil, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, asafoetida, goda masala, and salt.

To a blender jar, add freshly grated coconut, coriander leaves, green chillies, ginger and garlic.

Blend to a fine paste. Keep aside.

Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and hing.

Add green masala paste.

Saute for a minute on low flame.

Add green peas and mix.

Add salt and goda masala.

Add water. Cover and cook till the peas are cooked.

Serve green peas curry with rotis or rice or bread.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups green peas
  • 1/2 cup fresh coconut
  • 1 cup fresh coriander leaves
  • 3 green chillies
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 tsp goda masala
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • In to a mixer jar, add fresh coconut, coriander leaves, green chillies, garlic and ginger. Add little water and blend to a fine paste. Keep aside.
  • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and hing.
  • When the seeds start crackling, add the green masala paste. Saute for a minute on low flame.
  • Add green peas and mix.
  • Add salt and goda masala. Give a quick mix.
  • Add a cup of water.
  • Cover and cook till the peas are cooked.
  • You can adjust the consistency of the gravy as required by you by adding more/less water. Serve hot.
