Potato Fry – crispy, rava coated, shallow fried potato slice
Potato is one of the most versatile vegetables. They can be prepared in numerous ways and thus holds a special place in every cuisine. Whether boiled, fried, mashed, roasted, baked, potatoes adapt to various cooking techniques. From the traditional, regional dishes to exotic international recipes, potatoes are used everywhere. They can be used to make appetisers, snacks,salads, main course dishes or desserts.
Potato fry is a simple dish made by marinating potato slices in a spicy masala and later dipped in a rava rice flour mixture and shallow fried.

Potato Fry is a simple yet immensely delicious dish made by shallow frying masala coated potato slices dipped in rava rice flour mixture. Potato fry / Potato rava fry is a quick-to-make dish that can be served as a snack or as a side-dish with variety of main dishes . It pairs excellently with simple dal chawal. This dish is very commonly prepared in Konkani households and is known as Batata Phodi. Some other rava fried dishes on this blog are Breadfruit (Neerfanas) rava fry, Brinjal rava fry and Raw Banana fry.
List of ingredients to make Potato Fry
Potatoes
For the spice paste : Red chilli powder, turmeric powder, asafoetida, lemon juice and salt.
For outer coating : semolina, rice flour, salt and red chilly powder
Oil for shallow frying.
Step-wise recipe with instructions
Wash the potatoes and peel them.
Cut the potatoes into slices (neither too thick nor too thin).
Keep the potatoes immersed in water to prevent browning of potatoes.
To prepare the masala, in a plate add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, asafoetida, lemon juice and salt. Add a tbsp of water and mix well.
Coat the potato slices with this masala paste. Keep aside for 15 minutes.
For the outer coating, mix together rava, rice flour, salt and red chilly powder.
Coat each potato slice with this rava rice flour mixture.
Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan. Place the rava coated potato slices in the pan.
Cover the pan and cook until one side of the potato slices are fried.
Flip the potato slices. Cover the pan and let it cook on the other side.
Remove fried potatoes from the pan and place them on absorbent paper.
Serve Potato Fry with dal chawal or as side dish with your meals.

Ingredients
- 2 large potatoes
For Masala Paste
- 2 tbsp red chilli powder
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- ¼ tsp asafoetida (hing)
- salt as per taste
Outer coating
- 2 tbsp semolina (rava)
- 1 tbsp rice flour
- ½ tsp red chilly powder
- a pinch of salt
- Oil as required for shallow frying potatoes
Instructions
- Wash the potatoes and peel them.
- Cut the potatoes into slices (neither too thick nor too thin).
- Keep the potatoes immersed in water.
