Podi Sesame potatoes is an interesting dish that perfectly blends the spicy flavours of milagai podi and nutty goodness of sesame seeds with potatoes. Boiled tender baby potatoes are added to a tempering of sesame seeds, mustard seeds, curry leaves and are coated with milagai podi.
Milagai Podi also known as gunpowder or idli podi is a traditional South Indian spice blend which is used to elevate the taste of various dishes. Sesame seeds are known for its unique flavour and nutritional benefits. Combining these two ingredients with boiled baby potatoes creates a delicious dish that can be served as an appetiser or as a side dish with your meals.

About Podi Sesame Potatoes
Podi Sesame Potatoes is a quick dish made with baby potatoes. Baby potatoes are boiled until tender while ensuring that they retain their firmness. The potatoes are peeled and added to a tempering of mustard seeds, sesame seeds, curry leaves and milagai podi. The potatoes are coated well with milagai podi and sesame seeds. Finally, lemon juice is added to the potatoes and they are garnished with chopped coriander leaves.
Podi Sesame potatoes can be served as an appetiser or as a side dish with meals.
About Milagai Podi
Milagai Podi often referred to as “gun powder” is a spice blend from the southern states of India. It is popularly served with idlis and dosas. It is sprinkled on idlis, dosas with a drizzle of ghee or sesame oil. It is also served with steamed rice known as Podi Sadam. Steamed rice with milagai podi and warm ghee makes for a flavourful meal.
To make Milagai Podi, dry red chillies, udad dal, chana dal, sesame seeds and curry leaves are roasted and blend to a fine powder. Detailed recipe for Milagai Podi is here.
List of ingredients for the recipe
Baby Potatoes : small potatoes with thin skin. These potaotes have creamy texture and hold their shape when cooked.
Milagai Podi : This is a traditional south Indian spice blend also known as gun powder.
Seeds : mustard seeds and sesame seeds
Herbs : curry leaves and coriander leaves
Other ingredients : lemon juice, oil and salt
Step-wise recipe with pictures
Wash the potatoes . Transfer them to pressure cooker. Add salt and boil then for 3 to 4 whistles.
Once the steam escapes completely, open the pressure cooker. Drain the water and allow the potatoes to cool.
Peel the potatoes and prick each potato using a fork.
Next, add a tablespoon of Milagai podi to the potatoes.Coat the potatoes with milgai podi and keept aside.
Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, sesame seeds and curry leaves.
Next, add 2 tbsp of milagai podi. Saute for few seconds.
Add podi coated potatoes and salt. Mix well.
Turm off the heat. Add lemon juice .
Garnish with chopped coriander.
Serve hot.

Podi Sesame Potatoes | Tilwale Aloo with Podi
Ingredients
- 16 to 18 baby potatoes
- 3 tbsp of milagai podi
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tbsp white sesame seeds
- few curry leaves
- 2 tbsp of lemon juice
- 2 tbsp of fresh coriander leaves, chopped
- salt to taste.
Instructions
- Firstly, wash the potatoes well.
- Transfer the potatoes to a pressure cooker.
- Add water, salt and pressure cook them for 3 to 4 whistles while ensuring to retain their firmness.
- Once the pressure is released form the cooker, open the cooker.
- Drain the water and allow the potatoes to cool completely.
- Peel the potatoes.
- Prick each potato using a fork.
- Add a tablespoon of milagai podi to the potatoes.
- Mix well using your fingers so that the potatoes are coated well with podi.
- Set them aside.
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan.
- Add mustard seeds, sesame seeds and curry leaves.
- Add 2 tbsp of milagai podi and saute for few seconds.
- Now, add the podi coated potatoes. Mix well.
- Add salt as required. Give a quick mix.
- Turn off the heat. Add lemon juice.
- Mix well. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve hot.
