Prawns Koliwada

Prawns Koliwada  – Fresh prawns marinated with spices, coated with besan, cornflour and fried until golden and crisp.

Prawns Koliwada is one of the iconic dishes of Mumbai and is available at most of the restaurants in Mumbai. It is named Koliwada because its in Koliwada, Sion area of Mumbai that this dish was first made. It was prepared  by a Punjabi gentleman, Hukumchand Singh in the year 1955.

Prawns Koliwada is often served as an appetiser with green mint chutney, sliced  onions and lemon wedges. It makes for a good side dish with simple dal-chawal.  Another must-try sea-food appetiser  is Fish Amritsari, the recipe for which is here.

About Prawns Koliwada

Prawns Koliwada are crispy fried prawns that makes for an amazing appetiser or  a side dish with meals. To make Prawns Koliwada, fresh prawns are cleaned, deveined and marinated with turmeric powder, Kashmiri red chilly powder, ginger garlic paste, lemon juice and salt. The prawns are left to marinate for some time. Once the flavours are absorbed by prawns, they are coated with besan and cornflour mixture.  The coated prawns are then deep-fried till they tun crisp.

List of ingredients required to make Prawns Koliwada

Prawns :Medium sized prawns, cleaned and deveined.

For marination : turmeric powder, Kashmiri red chilly powder, ginger-garlic paste and salt.

Outer Coating : gram flour (besan), cornflour, carom seeds (ajwain), ginger garlic paste, Kashmiri red chilly powder, chaat masala and salt

Wash and devein the prawns.

In a mixing bowl, add deveined prawns, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, ginger-garlic paste , lemon juice and salt.

Mix well.

Cover and keep aside for 20 to 30 minutes.

In a mixing bowl, add besan, cornflour, ginger-garlic paste, carom seeds, red chilli powder, chaat masala and salt. Mix well using a spoon.

Add this mixture to the marinated prawns.

Coat the prawns well with this mixture. Sprinkle few drops of water if required and mix well.

Heat oil for frying. Drop marinated prawns one by one into the hot oil. Fry on low heat for 5 to 6 minutes.

Remove fried prawns using  a slotted spoon onto an absorbent paper.

Serve hot with green mint chutney or as a side dish with your meals.

Ingredients

  • 350 grams prawns
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Kashmiri red chilly powder
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • salt to taste

For outer coating

  • ½ cup gram flour (besan)
  • ¼ cup cornflour
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp carom seeds (ajwain)
  • 1 tbsp Kashmiri red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp chaat masala
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Wash and devein the prawns.
  • In a mixing bowl, add deveined prawns, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, ginger-garlic paste , lemon juice and salt. Mix well.
  • Cover and keep aside for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • In a mixing bowl,add besan, cornflour, ginger-garlic paste, carom seeds, red chilli powder, chaat masala and salt. Mix well using a spoon.
  • Add this mixture to the marinated prawns.
  • Coat the prawns well with this mixture.
  • Sprinkle few drops of water if required and mix well.
  • Heat oil for frying.
  • Drop marinated prawns one by one into hot oil.
  • Fry on low heat for 5 to 6 minutes.
  • Remove fried prawns usinga slotted spoon onto an absorbent paper.
  • Serve hot with green mint chutney or as a side dish with your meals.

Notes

For the coating, rice flour can also be used instead of  corn flour.
