About Tomato Khajur Chutney

Tomato Khajur Chutney is a tangy, sweet and mildly spicy chutney made with ripe tomatoes, dates and raisins. The chutney is flavoured with panch phoron, a Bengali spice blend made from five whole spices: fenugreek seeds, nigella seeds , cumin seeds, black mustard seeds , and fennel seeds. This chutney is especially made during festive occasions and is a part of traditional Bengali meals. The chutney pairs well with khichdi, luchi (puri) or paratha .

Tomatoes, Raisins, Dates,
For the tempering : Oil, Panch phoron (a mix of cumin seeds, mustard seeds, methi seeds, fennel seeds and nigella seeds), dry red chillies
Other ingredients : chopped ginger and salt

Step-wise instructions with pictures

Wash and chop the tomatoes.

Deseed and chop the dates.

Heat oil in a pan. Add panch phoron (a mix of cumin seeds, mustard seeds, methi seeds, fennel seeds and nigella seeds), . Saute for few seconds.

Add chopped dry chillies and saute.

Add chopped ginger and saute.

Add chopped tomatoes and salt. Saute on low heat for few minutes. Cover and cook till the tomatoes turn mushy.

Add jaggery powder and mix well till the jaggery dissolves.

Add raisins and chopped dates. Mix well. Cover and cook on low heat for 2 minutes.

 Tomato Khajur Chutney is ready. Allow it to cool and transfer to a glass jar. This can be stored upto 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

Ingredients

  • 4 large ripe tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp mustard oil
  • 1 tsp panch phoron ( a mix of cumin seeds, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, fennel seeds and nigella seeds)
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 1 tsp chopped ginger
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp jaggery powder
  • 2 tbsp raisins
  • 6 to 7 dates

Instructions
