Dalitoy

Dalitoy  is a simple, flavourful Konkani style dal made with minimum ingredients.

Dal is an essential staple in every Indian household. It holds a special place in Indian cuisine.  Made using different types of lentils such as tuvar dal, masoor dal, chana dal or moong dal, dal is a versatile dish which offers nutrition and comfort. Its preparation varies from region to region and even from family to family.

From the creamy dal makhani from North to the tangy sambar of South India, each variation of dal tells a story of local tradition and taste. One such variation is Dalitoy which is a basic dal prepared in GSB Konkani households.

About Dalitoy

Dalitoy is a simple yet popular dal from Konkani cuisine. It is very simple to make and requires minimum ingredients.  It is made without onion and garlic but uses a generous pinch of asafoetida. Asafoetida gives a distinct flavour and taste to this dal. The tempering is made using coconut oil which further enhances its flavour. This is a must-have dish in almost all Konkani festivals and gathering.  Dalitoy is typically served with steamed rice with some veggies, papad and pickle on the side.  Dalitoy served with piping hot steamed rice and ghee is an ultimate comfort food.

List of ingredients to make Dalitoy

Dal : Tuvar dal is traditionally used to make Dalitoy. However, other dals can also be used to make this.

Spices: green chillies, turmeric powder, asafoetida.

For tempering : coconut oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and dry red chillies.

Other ingredients : salt and water

Step-wise recipe to make Dalitoy

Wash and soak ½ cup tuvar dal for 30 to 40 minutes.

After 40 minutes, drain the water from dal and transfer soaked dal to a pressure cooker.

Add salt,1/2 tsp  turmeric powder and 1 ½  cups of water.

Pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.

Allow the pressure cooker to cool down before opening the lid. Whisk the dal till it becomes smooth in texture.

Add 2 chopped green chillies and ½ tsp asafoetida and bring the dal to boil on low heat.

Now,for the tempering, heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a small pan. Add 1 tsp mustard seeds, few curry leaves and 2 to 3 dry red chillies. 

When they start spluttering, pour the tempering into the dal. Serve dalitoy with steamed rice.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup tuvar dal
  • 2 green chillies, slit lengthwise
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)

For tempering

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • few curry leaves
  • 2 to 3 dry red chillies

Instructions

  • Wash and soak tuvar dal for 30 to 40 minutes
  • Drain the water and transfer tuvar dal to a pressure cooker.
  • Add turmeric, salt and 1 1/2 cups of water. Pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles.
  • Once the steam escapes fully, open the pressure cooker. Whisk the dal well.
  • Add green chillies and asafoetida and bring the dal to a boil.
  • For the tempering, heat 1 tbsp oil in a tadka pan.
  • Add mustard seeds.
  • When the seeds start crackling, add curry leaves and dry red chillies.
  • Pour this tempering into the dal.
  • Dalitoy is ready to be served
