Dussehra Thali 2023 – A festive meal prepared on the occasion of Dussehra.

This thali consists of rice, chapati, dalitoy (Konkani style dal), sprouted moong potato sabzi, paneer makhanwala, mixed veg raita, moong dal pakoda, dry fruits shrikhand, raw mango chutney, kurkuri bhindi, methamba and jalebi (store-bought)

1 small beetroot
1 medium sized carrot
1 cucumber
1 small green chilly, finely chopped
1 cup of curds
salt to taste


Peel and grate beetroot, carrot and cucumber. In a mixing bowl add curds and salt. Whisk well. Now add add grated beetroot, grated carrot, grated cucumber and  chopped green chilly. Mix well. Refrigerate and serve chilled.

Recipe for Dalithoy (Konkani style Dal)


½ cup tuvar dal
2 green chillies, slit lengthwise
½ tsp turmeric powder
salt to taste
a generous pinch of asafoetida (hing)

For tempering

1 tbsp coconut oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
few curry leaves
2 dry red chillies


Wash and soak tuvar dal for minimum 30 minutes. Drain the water and transfer tuvar dal to a pressure cooker. Add 2 cups of water, turmeric and salt. Pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles. Once the steam escapes fully, open the pressure cooker. Whisk the dal well. Add green chillies and asafoetida and bring the dal to a boil.

For the tempering, heat 2 tbsp oil in a tadka pan. Add mustard seeds. When the seeds start crackling, add curry leaves and dry red chillies. Pour this tempering into the dal. Dalithoy is ready to be served.
