Akhrot or walnuts are known for their health benefits, rich texture and distinct flavour. Akhrot Halwa is a perfect combination of nutrition and taste. The recipe for Akhrot Halwa is fairly simple and needs few ingredients.
I have earlier shared a recipe of walnut halwa which was made with walnuts, milk, mawa and jaggery and the halwa was cut into squares like barfi. The recipe that I am sharing today is another version of walnut halwa which is made without mawa.
There are different ways of making akhrot halwa. It can be made using mawa /milk powder/ condensed milk/ sugar etc.

About Akhrot Halwa
Akhrot Halwa is a traditional Indian dessert known for its rich taste and flavours. Walnut is the star ingredient of this dish which is known to be beneficial for brain health. It contains antioxidants that contribute to overall wellness.
To make Akhrot halwa, firstly the walnuts are ground to a coarse powder. It is cooked alongwith milk and jaggery on a low heat and is finally flavoured with cardamom powder. The final product is a delicious, nutty delight. This is a perfect dessert for festive/special occasions or when you are entertaining guests at home. Walnuts : Walnut is the star ingredient of this halwa.
Other ingredients : Milk, Ghee, Jaggery, Cardamom powder
Optional ingredient : Chopped pistachios for garnishing
Step-wise recipe with pictures
Take 2 cups of walnuts
Transfer the walnuts to a mixer jar.
Blend on pulse mode of the mixer to a coarse powder.
Heat a pan and add 1 tbsp ghee. Add walnut powder and saute for a minute or so.
Now add milk.
Keep stirring on low heat.
Keep stirring continuously until the mixture starts thickening
Add jaggery and keep stirring till the jaggery melts.
When the jaggery melts completely, the mixture will start spluttering. At this stage, cover the pan and cook on low flame for few minutes till the mixture attains halwa consistency.
The mixture will start leaving the sides of the pan.
Turn off the heat. Add cardamom powder.
Serve Akhrot halwa as a standalone dish or with vanilla ice-cream. It tastes best with vanilla ice-cream.

Ingredients
- 2 cups walnuts (akhrot)
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup jaggery
- ½ tsp cardamom powder
- 2 tbsp chopped pistachios for garnishing (optional)
Instructions
- Blend 2 cups of walnuts on pulse mode of the mixer to a coarse powder. Keep aside.
- Heata pan and add 1 tbsp ghee.
- Add walnut powder and saute for a minute or so.
- Now add milk. Keep stirring on low heat.
- Keep stirring continuously until the mixture starts thickening.
- Add jaggery and keep stirring till the jaggery melts.
- When the jaggery melts completely, the mixture will start spluttering.
- At this stage, cover the pan and cook on low flame for few minutes till the mixture attains the consistency of halwa.
- The mixture will start leaving the sides of the pan. Turn off the heat.
- Add cardamom powder and give a quick mix.
- Serve Akhrot halwa garnished with chopped pistachios, as a stand-alone dessert or with vanilla ice-cream.
- It tastes best with vanilla ice-cream.

The choice of serving temperature depends on each persons’ taste. It tastes great when it is slightly warm. Some people prefer to eat it chilled or cold. If you are serving it with vanilla ice-cream, the halwa should definitely be warm.
