Fresh Green Chana Sabzi – a delicious sabzi made with fresh green chickpeas.
Winter is a season of abundance when it comes to fresh vegetables. There are some vegetables which are available only during winters. Some vegetables commonly associated with winter are mustard greens, bathua, purple yam, surti papdi, fresh green garlic, fresh green chickpeas and so on. Fresh green chickpeas (cholia) and their leafy greens are available during this season. The tender green chickpeas have sweet and nutty flavour. About Fresh Green Chana Sabzi
Fresh Green Chanas are a powerhouse of nutrition. They are rich in protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. These tender chickpeas are made into a sabzi by cooking them in a green masala. The green masala is made by blending fresh coconut, coriander leaves, ginger, garlic, green chillies and a small quantity of tender chickpeas. The chickpeas are cooked in this masala alongwith spices. This delicious sabzi pairs well with rotis as well as steamed rice.

Green Chickpeas
For the green masala : fresh coconut, fresh coriander leaves, green chillies, ginger, garlic and green chana
Other ingredients : turmeric powder, cumin-corainder powder, garam masala and salt.
For garnishing : chopped coriander leaves.
Step-wise recipe with pictures
Shell the chickpeas. Wash and keep aside.
To prepare the green masala, into a mixer jar, add fresh coconut, fresh coriander leaves, green chillies, ginger, garlic and ¼ cup of shelled chickpeas and blend to a fine paste.
Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida. Saute for few seconds.
Add the green msasala.
Saute on low heat for few minutes.
Add turmeric powder, cumin-coriander powder and garam masala.
Mix well.Add the remaining green chanas and mix well.
Rinse the mixer jar and add that water.
Cover and cook till the chickpeas become soft.
Garnish with fresh chopped coriander leaves. Serve fresh green chana sabzi with hot rotis or steamed rice.

Fresh Green Chana Sabzi | Hare Chane ki Sabzi
Ingredients
- 400 grams of fresh green chickpeas (cholia)
- ½ cup of fresh, grated coconut
- 1 ½ cups of fresh coriander leaves
- 4 green chillies
- 1 tsp chopped ginger
- 6 to 7 cloves of garlic
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- ½ tsp asafoetida (hing)
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin coriander powder
- ½ tsp garam masala
- salt to taste
- 2 to 3 tsp chopped fresh coriander for garnishing
Instructions
- Shell the chickpeas. Wash and keep aside.
- Blend fresh coconut, coriander leaves, green chillies, ginger, garlic and 1/4 cup of shelled chickpeas to a fine paste. Keep aside.
- Heat oil in a pan.
- Add cumin seeds and hing. Saute for few seconds.
- Add green masala paste. Saute on low heat for few minutes.
- Add turmeric powder, cumin coriander powder and garam masala. Mix well.
- Rinse the mixer jar and add that water.
- Add the remaining chickpeas and salt to taste. Mix well.
- Add water as per the required consistency. Mix well.
- Cover and cook till the chickpeas become soft.
- Once done, garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rotis or steamed rice.
